The works for @sugarlift x @juxtapozmag’s ME: An Exhibition of Contemporary Self-Portraiture, keep coming in slowly and with half of them done the show is already looking fantastic • The 22 featured artist are taking very different routes towards making work that will represent them in some way, while staying along with their standard practice and aesthetics. When selecting artists for the show I was especially interested in seeing what some of my favorite painters that don’t work with traditional representational style would do with the theme, and @van_minnen didn’t fail to smash it with his piece titled Big Dumb Face • “When Sasha challenged me to make an actual self portrait I decided I'd try to use actual pictures of myself, which was a first. In addition, I asked a friend to draw a caricature of my face and I tattooed that drawing onto a featureless rendition of an old selfie from a while back, maybe an attempt at a passport photo or for an interview or something. It feels like some combination of how I experience self, a little bit tired and in cold-studio clothes, and how others may see me, generally cheerful and big dumb-faced.” — #christianrexvanminnen • ME will open on Jan 16th @ @thehighlinenine in NYC and feature works by @aleah_chapin, @gosmoothorgohome, @van_minnen, @colin.chillag, @danicalundyart, @demodemoooo, @dinabrodsky, @esiri.essi, @estebanog_art, @gunopark, @hiba_schahbaz, @jeanpierreroy, @jenny_morgan_jm, @justinliamobrien, @koichis49, @marcelodaldoce, @mayamasonart, @nicolasvsanchez, @pacopomet, @prudenceflint, @seannorvet, @tonytoscani

The Jungian concept of Anima is a slippery fish. The shallow read of it, as I’ve understood it so far, is that it’s masculinity’s internalized and imprinted concept of the feminine. Anima is also best buds w the shadow. They sleep on a futon in the basement of your mind while you lay awake all night listening to them fuck. In this show I’m doing with @aaronjohnsonart there are 7 portraits of Anima, 1 of which is huge and in some sense an attempt at understanding this concept collectively; Western machismo as Anima Possessed. Each has a surfer quickly stick and poked, blasted over top. While I dont pretend to be much of a surfer I have found it to be a powerful personal metaphor. I think of it like a superficial adrenaline crazed yet fearful character skimming precariously across the surface of the abyss that is inhabited by those deeper, more disturbing bedfellows of shadow and anima. Someone who visits this territory but briefly, juicing the fear and risk of it all. But its an iterative thing I think. Fear and acceptance doing a goddam do-see-do in and out of the light. In the end is all this flattened? Unified? And truth be told, I’m confused about it all, I don’t think I really get it but I’m certainly feeling it. Going thru it, pushing along towards what I think is a better way for me to be in the world. Utopian. This is what dynamic confusion looks like. “In Heaven Everything Is Fine” opens March 7th @rosskramergallery NYC #aaronjohnsonart #rosskramergallery #rkgallery #christianrexvanminnen #inheaveneverythingisfine #armoryshow #armoryweek #nyc
